The key is a function computing a key value for each element. If not specified or is None, key defaults to an identity function and returns the element unchanged. The key thing to recognize with itertools.groupby is that items are only grouped together as long as they're sequential in the iterable. This is why sorting works, because basically you're rearranging the collection so that all of the items which satisfy callback(item) now appear in the sorted collection sequentially.
