When debug information is available in the shader, RenderDoc allows debugging at the HLSL level. This is activated by default if the shader was built with optimisation disabled, but as long as debug information is available you can toggle between assembly and HLSL debugging at any time. I've seen it caused by wearing a custom helmet (Respiration IV) whilst shaders were in use, because the shaders didn't know how to handle the unexpected visibility due to the enchantment.
