Web Reference: The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is an American four-engined heavy bomber aircraft that was developed in the mid-1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). A fast and high-flying bomber used primarily in the European Theater of Operations, the B-17 dropped more bombs than any other aircraft during World War II. Turbo-supercharged radial engines (a uniquely American development) were to give the necessary high-altitude performance, and heavy defensive armament was to provide protection against attacking fighters. Accuracy was to be achieved with the Norden bombsight, developed and fielded in great secrecy during the 1930s. Apr 8, 2024 · These planes were first flown in December 1936. The B-17 was first in operation with the US Army Air Force (USAAF) in 1937 and so became the first four-engined monoplane bomber with an all- metal bodywork to see service in any country. The first B-17 squadron was based at Langley Field, Virginia.
