It is developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2001. AES has been adopted by the US government. It supersedes the Data Encryption Standard (DES), [9] which was published in 1977. The algorithm described by AES is a symmetric-key algorithm, meaning the same key is used for both encrypting and decrypting the data. In the same manner as the 128-bit input block is arranged in the form of a state array, the algorithm first arranges the 16 bytes of the encryption key in the form of a 4 × 4 array of bytes, as shown at the top of the next page.
