Web Reference: Abstract— The lazy Viterbi decoder is a maximum-likelihood de-coder for block and stream convolutional codes. For many codes of practical interest, under reasonable noise conditions, the lazy decoder is much faster than the original Viterbi decoder. In 1967, Andrew Viterbi determined that convolutional codes could be maximum-likelihood decoded with reasonable complexity using time invariant trellis-based decoders — the Viterbi algorithm. In-tegrated with the Viterbi algorithm (VA), complexity reduction methods often use the sum log likelihood (SLL) of a Markov path as a bound to dis-prove the optimality of other Markov path sets and to consequently avoid exhaustive path search.
