While it offers many benefits, such as cleaner code and better testability, it also comes with its own set of challenges. I think that the reason functional programming isn't used very widely is because it gets in your way too much. It's hard to take a serious look at, for example, Lisp or Haskell, without saying "this whole language is one big abstraction inversion."
