Web Reference: Oct 11, 2025 · If a string can change and will be accessed from multiple threads, use a StringBuffer because StringBuffer is synchronous, so you have thread-safety. If you don't want thread-safety than you can also go with StringBuilder class as it is not synchronized. StringBuffer has the same methods as the StringBuilder, but each method in StringBuffer is synchronized so it is thread safe. StringBuffer and StringBuilder data can only be created using new operator. The StringBuilder class was introduced as of Java 5 and the main difference between the StringBuffer and StringBuilder is that StringBuilders methods are not thread safe (not synchronised). It is recommended to use StringBuilder whenever possible because it is faster than StringBuffer.
